A charming and bittersweet tale of desire
One of Puccini's rare and dazzling treasures
One of Puccini's rare and dazzling treasures
Whilst she is at home in the glittering salons of Paris, the courtesan Magda can't help but reminisce, wistfully recalling her days footloose and fancy-free. Aided by the posturing of a poet and his sentiments on true love, she decides a trip to an old haunt might curb the nostalgia. But when the handsome young Ruggero arrives, she can't be blamed for wanting the night, and her disguise, to last forever.
A beguilingly romantic gem from Puccini, Minnesota Opera share this rarely staged work, replete with its blissful score and rumination on the paths we didn't take. Is it too late to start again to find happiness, or like the Rondine (the swallow) of the title, are we destined to fly back to where we know?
