A Grand Opera
How the Big Fix played out still divides opinion, but in a scheme involving a group of gamblers, and eight White Sox players including Arnold 'Chick' Gandil, Claude 'Lefty' Williams, and Oscar 'Happy' Felsch, it was agreed that the players would be paid around $100,000 if they threw the World Series when they played underdogs Cincinnati Reds. At the time, Chicago White Sox were heralded as the best baseball team in the America, but their owner was tight with his money; he paid his players poor pay packets and this led to resentment within the team, with some ending up plotting their revenge.
The Fix is a grand opera by Joel Puckett and commissioned by Minnesota Opera. It features a libretto by the Academy and Tony Award winner, Eric Simonson, and showcases Puckett's extraordinary style which melds tradition with innovation. Expect a night of heartbreakingly meaningful music where match-fixing is set against the all American baseball backdrop.
