A vital, rock-infused portrayal of Jesus Christ's last days
In 1971, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's latest musical debuted on Broadway and the world of musical theater was never the same again. A bombastic rock opera based on the Gospels, Jesus Christ Superstar portrays the last week of Jesus' life, heavily focusing on his relationship with Judas Iscariot. Imbued with modern sensibilities and contemporary political and social themes, this show is about a very human Jesus Christ, one who must reckon with his impending death.
Aside from cleverly bringing the Passion into the 20th Century, Jesus Christ Superstar of course boasts one of Lloyd Webber's most exuberant and exciting scores, including the now classic numbers 'Superstar and 'I Don't Know How to Love Him'. As both a vital part of Broadway history and a top-draw musical, this show is a must-see!
